Trace="True" and partial postbacks

When a page is set to Trace="True", partial postback fail with an error stating that there is a problem parsing the page and the reason could be because Trace is set to True. OK, so how are we supposed to trace our pages then?

You can use Tracing but you can't use the pageouput option (so that the trace gets displayed on your webpage). That's causing the error. What you can do is set the page output to false.

<traceenabled="true"pageOutput="false"/>

If you want to view the tracelog, you can view it usingtrace.axd(http://somewebsite/trace.axd)

Trapping server errors

If an asynchronous call generates an error on the server side, the client displays a Javascript alert box with the basic error message, for instance "Object reference not set to an instance of an object".

Is there any mechanism to trap and react to these errors on the client side, for instance directing them to an error page instead of showing them the alert box?

Mike

You can set in web.config

<customErrors mode="RemoteOnly" defaultRedirect="GenericError.aspx">
</customErrors>

So that client side will be rredirected to GenericError.aspx instead of getting an error...

I think you misunderstand the question. These are server side errors that occur on an AJAX asynchronous postback, rather than a regular postback, so it is not possible to redirect the client by using either the built in ASP.NET custom error page functionality, or by using Response.Redirect.

There must be some mechanism within the AJAX library for me to specify what to do in the case of an exception being raised. Really, all I want to do is, instead of the alert box showing the .NET error message, it should show something generic like "Oops, an error occured".

Can someone tell me how I do this?

Mike

Check this example, might be useful for you .

TreeView inside detailsView throws javascript error

Hi,

I have a DetailsView control inside which I place a treeview control. For EditItemTemplate, I set the following property for the treeview control - ShowCheckBoxes="All". For ItemTemplate this property is not set. It is working fine.

But when I place this detailsView inside an updatePanel, it is throwing javascript error. The error is thrown when I click on the expand node of the treeview control. This javascript error is thrown only in Edit Mode of the detailsview.

The javascript error is "ct100_ContentPlaceHolder1_DetailsView1_TreeView1_Data is undefined.". In ReadOnly Mode, the javascript error is not thrown and the node is expanded properly.

What could be the problem?

Thanks & Regards,

Maya

Hi,

Please find the code requested pasted below. The detailsview uses an xml datasource to bind. I am pasting that xml file also at the end. When I click on the + sign beside the File Item in the Treeview, it throws javascript error. This happens only when the detailsview is in edit mode. This error does not occur if I simply remove the asp:updatepanel tags. Any idea where I might be going wrong?

I tested your codes and got the same javascript error as yours in your first post. We can not set asp:DetailsView for asynchronous post back in asp:UpdatePanel.Maybe this is a bug of asp:UpdatePanel in Ajax Beta 2.It can work fine if we set <asp:PostBackTrigger ControlID="DetailsView1"/>
Try to change your codes as the following and it works fine,but there will be postback to take place.Otherwise we need to look forward to Ajax another release.Wish this bug could be solved in the near future.

The javascript error is "ct100_ContentPlaceHolder1_DetailsView1_TreeView1_Data".

In ReadOnly Mode, the javascript error is not thrown and the node is expanded properly.

What could be the problem?

Thanks & Regards,

Maya

While we work closely with the ASP.NET AJAX team when developing the Toolkit, they're the real experts on general ASP.NET AJAX issues. Your problem doesn't seem to be directly related to the Toolkit, so we'd appreciate if you considered posting to one of theother newsgroups such asAJAX Discussion and Suggestions. Your post will be more helpful to others looking for similar advice if it's in the right place. Thank you!

treeview inside of updatepanel = Validation of viewstate MAC failed

i have some nodes added to my treeview inside of an updatepanel and it seems to give me "

Validation of viewstate MAC failed" error each tme i click a node twice.

Nothing happens on the first time i click a node

is there some tutorial or standard thing to do with a treeview in an update panel?

It sounds very strange about asp:TreeView and asp:UpdatePanel from your description.Can you post some codes here? I'd like to test it.
I tested asp:UpdatePanel working with asp:TreeView in Ajax RC 1.0 and found it worked.
Here are my testing codes for your reference.
<asp:UpdatePanel ID="UpdatePanel1" runat="server">
<ContentTemplate>
<asp:TreeView ID="tv" runat="server" OnSelectedNodeChanged="tv_SelectedNodeChanged">
<Nodes>
<asp:TreeNode Text="File" Value="File"></asp:TreeNode>
<asp:TreeNode Text="Edit" Value="Edit"></asp:TreeNode>
<asp:TreeNode Text="View" Value="View"></asp:TreeNode>
</Nodes>
</asp:TreeView>
</ContentTemplate>
</asp:UpdatePanel>
<asp:UpdateProgress ID="UpdateProgress2" runat="server"
AssociatedUpdatePanelID="UpdatePanel1"
DisplayAfter="2000"
DynamicLayout="False">
<ProgressTemplate>
UpdatePanel1 is updating now!
<input type="button" id="AbortCallbackButton" value="Abort" onclick="AbortCallback()" />
</ProgressTemplate>
</asp:UpdateProgress>
<br />
This is text after the UpdatePanel and UpdateProgress controls.
<script type="text/javascript">
function AbortCallback()
{
Sys.WebForms.PageRequestManager.getInstance().abortPostBack();
}
</script>
Behind Codes:
protected void tv_SelectedNodeChanged(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
System.Threading.Thread.Sleep(10000);
}
Wish this can help you.

Trigger design-time error

At the begin, is all ok: when I open my project the controls was showed normally.
After first run, when I switch from html view to design-view the updatepanel control show this error:

Error Creating Control - Content1
'Triggers' could not be initialized. Details: 'Triggers' could not be added to the collection. Details: Object does not match target type.

This is my code:

<%

</asp:Content>

I must say that I use April CTP of Atlas and Atlas controlToolkit too.
Now i try to delete triggers section and change update panel mode to always, and the page was displayed correctly. But if I insert again triggers section the error come back.
What I can do? thanks

I also just started getting the same design time error ..

Error Creating Control - Content1
'Triggers' could not be initialized. Details: 'Triggers' could not be added to the collection. Details: Object does not match target type.

And in my specific case, I have:

And .. I've been using pages that have a very similar setup for like 2 weeks without problems like this.
Then today, I started getting the 'Error Creating Control' message when I went from Source view of the asp page to the Design view.

<asp:Content id="content1"> <atlas:UpdatePanel id="updatePanel1" runat="server" mode="Conditional"> <ContentTemplate> ... <asp:GridView ... /> ... </ContentTemplate> <Triggers> <atlas:ControlEventTrigger ControlID="button1" EventName="Click" /> <atlas:ControlValueTrigger ControlID="ddl1" PropertyName="SelectedValue" /> </Triggers> </atlas:UpdatePanel> ... <asp:Button id="button1" runat="server" Text="Huh?"> ... <asp:DropDownList id="ddl1" runat="server" /> ...</asp:Content>
Need assistance with this problem .. thanks!
Hmm .. interesting, so .. I open up the project this morning. The problem I was having yesterday isn't occurring anymore. Not much has changed from yesterday to today, other than I've added more content to the page.
I believe this is a bug with the IDE not handeling the trigger well in design mode. I have had this exact same problem and fix it by restarting VS 2005.

For some reason, the error went away for me when I hit "Save"...

if that's any help

Trigger Hack... make any control a trigger for your update panel.

I ran into a problem where I got the error message"A control with ID 'foo' could not be found for the trigger in UpdatePanel bar'."

Basically, I have an update panel with a FormView in it, and in the FormView's EditItem template, I have another UpdatePanel with a Wizard in it. I want the UpdatePanel with the Wizard to trigger on certain Wizard events (like NextButtonClick, PreviousButtonClick), but when the page loads, I get the common error message above.

The long story is, I could just set ChildrenAsTriggers=True for the panel with the wizard, but the different wizard steps have their own UpdatePanels, and I don't want to redraw the whole wizard because someone clicked a radio button, for example... So I decided to fix the problem.

Basically, I wrote a simple control that has an event (UpdateTrigger). It has a single public function to fire that trigger (FireUpdateTrigger). Simple, huh?

So Now I can drop the control on the page right after the UpdatePanel (same nesting level), to be sure that the UpdatePanel can find it. Then, in my Wizard markup, I just add some properties like OnNextButtonClick="WizardEvent" OnPreviousButtonClick="WizardEvent" etc. In the code behind, the WizardEvent trigger simply calls the helper control's FireUpdateTrigger method, which causes the panel to update... like I said, simple.

Here's the code (pretty complexStick out tongue):

using System.ComponentModel;using System;using System.Web.UI;namespace MMCS.WebControls{ [ToolboxData("<{0}:UpdateTriggerHelper runat=server></{0}:UpdateTriggerHelper>")]public class UpdateTriggerHelper : Control, INamingContainer {private static readonly object EventUpdateTrigger =new object(); [Category("Action")] [Browsable(true)] [Bindable(false)] [DefaultValue(null)] [PersistenceMode(PersistenceMode.Attribute)]public event EventHandler UpdateTrigger { add { Events.AddHandler(EventUpdateTrigger,value); } remove { Events.RemoveHandler(EventUpdateTrigger,value); } }public void FireUpdateTrigger() { EventHandler handler = Events[EventUpdateTrigger]as EventHandler;if (handler !=null) { handler(this, EventArgs.Empty); } } }}

Trouble getting started with drag/drop -- JS Error

Hi,

I am new to Atlas and am working my way through some tutorials. I am trying to use some hover/popup behaviors that rely on the AtlasUIDragDrop script. However, when I try to load it up I get a JS error. I've got a bunch of other atlas controls on the same page, and they all work, so I'm not sure what's wrong.

Here's what I have:

<atlas:ScriptManager ID="ScriptManager1" runat="server">
<Scripts>
<atlas:ScriptReference ScriptName="AtlasUIDragDrop" />
</Scripts>
</atlas:ScriptManager>
...
<page xmlns:script="http://schemas.microsoft.com/xml-script/2005">
<references>
<add src="http://pics.10026.com/?src=ScriptLibrary/Atlas/Release/AtlasUIDragDrop.js" />
</references>
<components>
...

When I load up my page, I get the following JS error:

"Web is not defined. AtlasUIDragDrop.js (line 6)"

Thanks in advance for any help!

-Nick
Hi,

check your code because the Web namespace has been renamed to Sys.
Thanks - that did the trick.

Trouble installing Control Toolkit

Hi all, I cannot install the toolkit properly. Is there a specific location that I should extract the files to? I get error messages saying that certain files (website examples etc.) didn't install properly. Thanks for your help.

Andy

Hi MonkeyInquisition,

monkeyinquisition:

Is there a specific location that I should extract the files to?

As far as I know, there's no specific location limited. But it is recommended to extract the files to System Driver(c):\Program Files\Microsoft ASP.NET.

To install the Ajax Control Toolkit, you'd better have a glance at this: http://www.asp.net/ajax/control-toolkit/live/Walkthrough/Setup.aspx. Also, there's a pretty good video tutorial provide on this url: http://www.asp.net/learn/ajax-videos/.

By the way, Ajax Control Toolkit works depend on Asp.net 2.0 Ajax Extensions, so you should install it first. It's video tutorial is also provided on the url above.Thanks

I hope this help.

Best regards,

Jonathan

Trouble with update panel animations after rc1 upgrade

Hi,

I'm having some trouble with my update panel animations after upgrading to rc1. Here's the error message I'm receiving:

Animation on TargetControlID="UpdatePanel1" uses property AjaxControlToolkit.AnimationExtender.OnUpdating that does not exist or cannot be set

Other toolkit controls appear to be working in the app, although the only other I use is the confirm button extender. When I first run the project and it encounters an update panel animation, visual studio will ask me for the location of Animation.cs (I'm using the pre-compiled version of the toolkit).

Also, the update animation control works correctly within the sample page included with the toolkit, so the problem would seem to be within my app. Any suggestions? Thanks

Got it. Typo on my part
